Probate Fee

The probate fee is the application fee charged by the Probate Registry for issuing a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration in England and Wales. [source: gov-uk/probate-fees-2026-04-29.html]

The current fees are:

  • £300 if the value of the estate is over £5,000.
  • No fee if the estate is £5,000 or less.
  • £16 for each extra copy of the probate document (useful when sending originals to multiple banks and other institutions in parallel).
  • £21 for a second application (for example, where an executor with "power reserved" later steps in and applies). [source: gov-uk/probate-fees-2026-04-29.html]

Help with fees is available for applicants on a low income or certain benefits, applied for online or via form EX160 before submitting the probate application. [source: gov-uk/probate-fees-2026-04-29.html]

The fee is paid in addition to any inheritance tax owed. It is reclaimable from the estate as an administration expense, so executors who pay it personally are reimbursed once the grant is issued and assets are released. [source: gov-uk/probate-fees-2026-04-29.html]

The fee is paid as part of the online application using Form PA1P (with a will) or Form PA1A (no will). Solicitors' fees, where instructed, are separate from the registry fee.
